A branch is a separate line of work in a Git project. It is like making a copy of a recipe to try a change without altering the version everyone else is using.

A developer might create a branch to add a new website feature. They can save several related changes there and later ask to combine them with the main line of work.

Branches make parallel work easier, but they do not automatically prevent conflicts when two branches change the same part of a file.
